Since 1924, the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club has been a fixture in Downtown St. Pete.

Before coming to town in 2021, the last time I played was on the Atlantic City boardwalk. I was eleven years old.

That's it. That's my whole shuffleboard résumé.

Last Friday, I went to the club's free weekly event, where both members and newcomers are welcome. Since starting St. Pete Shuffle in 2005, the club has welcomed thousands of people through these nights.

Now I'm one of them.

More than 50 courts. Two or four players to a game. Weather permitting, play runs from 7 to 10 PM.

You don't need to know the rules. Volunteers and staff will get you set up on a court and show you how to play.

Bring a cooler. Bring some snacks. That's really it.

It's an old-school way to get outside and meet people you might never otherwise run into: families, retirees, twenty-somethings, longtime regulars, and people showing up for the first time.

A membership gets you unlimited play along with access to leagues and tournaments. But you don't need to join for Friday nights.

Just show up.
