IT'S NICE TO BE HERE

The view from here is the terrace of our top-floor apartment in the 16th arrondissement, dead on to the Eiffel Tower. It’s just the top of the hour. The tower twinkles for five minutes, and then it stops.

When we arrived in France, Michael patted my arm and said, “It’s nice to be here.” He was right. It’s always nice to be here. I am happy here. At ease.

So fun to be back. When you come back often enough, you don’t have to do the usual things one does when visiting Paris for the first or second time.

This trip, we did a lot of hanging out at the beautiful apartment we rent, in a neighborhood that has become a bit second nature to us. Our patisserie. Our boulangerie. Our corner café. The lovely woman who owns the wine shop. All here for us.

We’re thirty minutes from the city center, so we feel a little away from it all. At the same time, we feel part of the neighborhood buzz.

And we did the things we always do. The Fondation Louis Vuitton in the Bois de Boulogne, with a wonderful exhibition spread over ten floors and a delicious lunch in the café afterward. Then off to the Place des Vosges for shopping and a cup of tea. Then stroll through the Marais.

Really, a normal day in Paris. Unremarkable for here, but remarkable for someone coming from St. Pete.

Last night we had dinner with friends at Number 41 on Avenue Mozart, our neighborhood restaurant. As we were leaving, Michael said to the waiter who recognized us, “See you next year.” That may well be true.

I always tell Michael he never has to ask me, “Do you want to go to Paris?” All he has to say is, “We’re going to Paris on this date.” And I plan around that. That’s it.
