People Coming to St. Pete Often Have a Boat or Boat Aspirations

Most people who ask me about waterfront homes aren’t really asking about a house. They’re asking about a way of life.

Last night I spent an evening aboard a 46-foot catamaran docked downtown. It belongs to newish friends who effectively use it as a vacation home. They gave me the full tour: three levels, three bedrooms, three bathrooms, and three different lounge areas, with room for eight at dinner. We ate under the stars with good food, better wine, and fun conversation.

About half the out-state clients that I work with are either serious boaters or dreaming about becoming one. Sailboats and motor boats in equal measure. Many want a home with a boat dock and access to open water, which is not hard to find in St. Pete. Some want a downtown condo in direct proximity to The St. Petersburg Yacht Club. The serious boaters know exactly what they want, while the dreamers are more aspirational. They want their options open for a boat down the road.

When I asked my friends what they love most about boating, beyond getting to beautiful places, they didn’t talk about the boat. They talked about community. A marina is more than a place to park. It has amenities, sometimes a pool, activities, and people who look out for one another.

From now on I will have a better appreciation and understanding of my clients’ boating desires.
