Ted Peters Famous Smoked Fish: The line is worth it.

A first visit to Ted Peters Famous Smoked Fish, a St. Pete institution since 1951, where people line up before the doors open and the mullet lunch is worth the wait.

Last Friday, I stopped by Ted Peters Famous Smoked Fish for the first time, and people were already lined up fifteen minutes before it opened.

I went all in. I ordered the Famous Smoked Fish Lunch: mullet, served with pickle, tomato, onion, and lemon, for $13.50. Delicious and satisfying.

Ted Peters opened in 1951 on Pasadena Avenue in St. Pete. It’s still at the same location and run by the same family, now in its fifth generation. The fish is smoked over red oak, and the fish spread shows up at backyard barbecues all over town.

The waitresses look like they’ve been there since the day it opened. They’re salty and no-nonsense, in the best way.

It reminded me of Blackie’s Hot Stand in Cheshire, Connecticut, an iconic spot near where I grew up which I featured in August. Every town needs a place like this, where people keep coming back for decades because nothing has changed.

Just one stop on the drive walk I would take you on. Learn more about St. Pete at: https://www.jonkellystpete.com
