The Fourth of July From 39 Floors Above St. Petersburg

A Fourth of July evening from the 39th floor of Art House reveals a different side of St. Petersburg, with neighborhood fireworks stretching across the city for hours.

The Fourth of July From 39 Floors Above St. Petersburg

On the Fourth of July, we assumed we'd see nothing.

From the 39th floor at Art House, we face the Gulf, not Tampa Bay, so the city's official fireworks would not be in view. We didn't feel like heading to the Pier.

Then the sun went down, and we realized we had one of the best seats in the city.

Not for one fireworks show, but for dozens of them.

Neighborhood by neighborhood, backyard by backyard, small displays lit up across St. Petersburg in every direction we could see. Back and forth, corner to corner, it continued for almost two hours.

No single show was the spectacle.

I snapped one photo to send to a friend, not thinking I would write about the night. It barely captures it.

There's something about that view that says more about this place than any planned event could. People simply came outside and celebrated in their own pockets of the city, and from high above it all stitched together into one long, quiet, beautiful thing.

That's the version of St. Pete I'd want someone to fall in love with.

If this kind of place is starting to feel like home to you too, I'd love to talk about what that could look like.
