The James Museum: Western Art in Downtown St. Petersburg
05/07/26
Jon Kelly highlights The James Museum and the concentration of world-class museums that make Downtown St. Petersburg such a compelling place to live.

One of the reasons I moved to St. Pete was the number of world-class museums here.
If you are fortunate enough to live downtown, as I do, The James Museum, The Dalí Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Chihuly Collection at the Morean Arts Center, and the Museum of the American Arts and Crafts Movement are all just steps from your front door.
That bronze cowboy sitting outside the entrance should tell you a lot about The James Museum.
Inside, Tom and Mary James have filled nine galleries with paintings, sculpture, and handcrafted jewelry that evoke the wide-open American West in the middle of Downtown St. Petersburg.
They collected what genuinely moved them, and that personal devotion comes through in every room.
For someone who grew up in the Northeast like me, it is an unexpected gift hiding in plain sight on Central Avenue.
If you are curious about what it feels like to live in a city where culture like this is just outside your door, I am happy to show you around.
