THE VIEW FROM HERE — WEEKEND SERIES

This week from Litchfield, Connecticut.

A charming old place in nearby New Preston, taken briefly out of commission by a bees' nest. Small, absurd, very New England — the kind of thing that makes you smile before you even get to the point of the post.

The sign was on a pair of French doors in a home furnishings store, doors that normally open onto a river view. Today the bees had other plans.

Speaking of things that stick around: a short walk from where we're staying sits the Tapping Reeve House, the country's first law school. Aaron Burr and John C. Calhoun both studied there before becoming vice president — a place built to send people out into the world.

A few doors down, my sister raised her family and never really left. Her two daughters are raising their own families here now — three generations, in a town none of us are actually from.

Last night my niece Sarah hosted a dinner for fifteen. Screaming children everywhere. Joyful, all of it.

I keep coming back to leaving and returning in these posts. My sister just did it differently — she chose this place once, and her daughters chose it again. And somewhere down the street, the bees are still working on theirs too.
