Paris and the Pleasure of Wandering
10/20/26
After countless visits, Paris feels less like a destination than an instinct—the kind of city best experienced by choosing a direction and wandering.

COMMUNITY | MONDAY SERIES
I’m just back from Paris, and I bought were three jars of mustard.
When I travel, I don’t buy much for myself anymore. I guess I’ve reached a point where I have what I need. This trip was different. The mustard was for the three women who run the front desk at my building. I stopped by La Maison Maille French Boutique at 6, place de la Madeleine and made a special selection. Each jar came carefully wrapped in its own little black shopping bag.
They love to cook, so they were delighted, but also touched that I thought of them while on vacation. And I did think of them. I enjoy every minute I get to spend in Paris, but I also missed my community here. I work from the lobby workstation and stay attuned to what’s happening in the building, so these women are part of my mornings.
I spent the trip writing about how small communities work. Coming home, I realized mine is stronger and more personal than I’d noticed. It’s the ArtHouse condominium building where I live and my wonderful downtown neighborhood.
Since coming back, the weather has been sunny with cooler temperatures.
This weekend I took the dog to the waterfront park down the street, then put the top down and ran my errands: dry cleaning, CVS, a car wash. It was my first time with the top down since June, and I was happy just to be out. I’m back to my routines: Publix, CVS, Roger’s Cleaners, and Linda the seamstress hemming my pants.
It’s all here, my community in St. Pete.
This is the drive I would take you on. The rest at https://www.jonkellystpete.com.
